Green Bay, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Bouncing back from just its third defeat of the season almost a week ago, the Green Bay women's basketball team returned home and defeated Davenport 53-40 in its final nonconference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center.
The Phoenix (9-3) received a five assist performance from senior point guard Megan Lukan, who became the program's Division I all-time leader in that category. With four minutes remaining in the first half, Lukan found her teammate Mehryn Kraker underneath the basket for the layup, moving her past Natalie Berglin and into her first with 424 assists before adding three more to move her total to 427.
“A lot of the credit goes to my teammates. They're the ones making the shots and scoring the points,” Lukan said.
Green Bay began the game on a 14-0 run, before Davenport finally scored its first points of the game at the 11:48 mark of the first half. Mariah Monke had six points during that quick burst to start the game for the Phoenix, while four other players chipped in as well.
Kraker got back to her scoring ways by finishing with a game-high 14 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Monke added eight points of her own and snagged a game-high nine rebounds. The only other player to finish in double figures for the Phoenix was Sam Terry, who added 12 points off the bench while going 3-for-4 from three-point land.
It was another cold shooting performance for the Phoenix, which finished just 21-for-59 (35.6 percent) from the floor and 6-for-23 (26.1 percent) from beyond the arc. It marked the fourth straight game that Green Bay has shot less than 40 percent from the floor, but it did manage to go 3-1 in those games.
“We have to make shots, it's as simple as that. We're not going to change what we've been doing. We just have to find a way to make our open looks,” head coach Kevin Borseth said.
Green Bay did have 14 second chance points, thanks in large part to the 18 offensive rebounds the team grabbed. Davenport only made one second chance basket, as the Phoenix held the visitors to only six offensive rebounds.
The Phoenix finish the nonconference portion of its schedule with a 10-3 record, which includes multiple significant victories, both on the road and on a neutral floor. Green Bay can now turn its attention to Horizon League play, where it has won 16-consecutive championships.
Green Bay opens up league action with defending Horizon League Tournament champion Wright State on Wednesday (Jan. 7) in Dayton, Ohio. Tip is set for 6 p.m. central time.
