CLEARWATER, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (3-3) softball team started off the
Under Armour Showcase with an impressive showing, going 2-0 during the opening
day of competition picking up wins over Central Connecticut State (5-2) and
Quinnipiac (7-2).
Game 1 - Green Bay 5, Central
Connecticut State 2
Green
Bay jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and never
looked back in game one. Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) and Paige Newtols
(Green Bay, Wis.) each had an RBI in the frame for the Phoenix as they went
ahead 3-1 after the first.
The
Phoenix would add another run in the second inning when Amanda Omahen (San
Diego, Calif.) followed a double by Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) with a
sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.).
Newtols
and Cooney each had two hits in the contest while Omahen scored a pair of runs
for the Phoenix. On the mound, Cooney scattered nine hits but just two runs in
seven innings. The senior had three strikeouts in the complete game effort.
Game 2 - Green Bay 7, Quinnipiac 2 (8 innings)
The
Phoenix scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure the win
after Quinnipiac knotted the contest 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
With
two outs in the top of the first inning of play, Newtols singled to
right-center field scoring Alli Rivera (Geneseo,
Ill.) for the early 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac knotted the game 1-1 in the bottom of
the first off a fielders' choice by the Phoenix.
The
Phoenix broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth when freshman Miranda Reinke
(Milwaukee, Wis.) singled to right-center field scoring classmate Haley Andrews (Kirkland, Wash.), giving Green Bay
the 2-1 advantage.
With
two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Quinnipiac tied the game with an rbi
single to center field, sending the game into extra innings.
Green
Bay scored five runs off three hits in the top of the eighth inning. Newtols
started the scoring with an rbi double to right-center field while Junion added
an rbi single. The Phoenix tacked on four unearned runs to seal the 7-2 win.
The
Phoenix will continue its competition in the Under Armour Showcase as it faces
host University of Southern Florida Saturday at 12:30 p.m. before wrapping up
the day battling U-MASS at 5:30 p.m.
