WAUSAU, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay Nordic skiing squad concluded competition in 2013, sending select individuals to compete at the Wausau Junior Olympic National Qualifier at Greenwood Hills.
The two-day competition consisted of a sprint series on Saturday and distance classic on Sunday.
“It was a good day of racing for the men’s team,” head coach Steve Teclaw said. “All of the guys skied well for an early season race, and I’m very pleased with how they looked on the race course, helping to set things up nicely for the remainder of the season.
“The women skied well and have shown improvement in their classic skiing, which has always been an area of focus for them.”
Leading the way in the sprint series on Saturday was junior Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.), who competed in the U20/U18 freestyle sprint, winning heat 1 of the division and finishing third in semifinal 1 before finishing in the top spot in the ‘A’ final. Teammate freshman Kyle Marshall (Roseville, Minn.) also participated in the division, winning heat 2 of the quarterfinals and finishing second in semifinal 1 en route to a third-place finish in the ‘A’ final.
Senior Paul Choudir (Custer, Wis.) and sophomore Phil Anshutz (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) took part in the quarterfinals of the college division freestyle sprints but did not advance finishing fourth and third in their heats, respectively.
For the women, freshman Cassie Thobe (Forest Lake, Minn.) finished third in heat 2 of the quarterfinals and classmate Kayla Billett (Anoka, Minn.) finished fifth in heat 4 of the quarterfinals, with neither advancing in the U20/U18 freestyle sprints. Junior Krista White (Waukesha, Wis.) competed in the freestyle sprints college division and advanced all the way to the finals but did not place in the ‘B’ final.
On Sunday, the men had five individuals compete in the 10K distance classic. Nichols again led the way, finishing eighth overall and second in the U20 division with a time of 32:05.71. Marshall followed, placing 15th overall and fourth in the U20 division (32:41.99) and sophomore Ben Lindberg (Rochester, Minn.) finished 57th overall and 16th in the U20 division (36.11.64). Also competing was Anschutz and Choudoir in the college division. Anschutz placed 48th overall and 22nd in the college division with a time of 35:29.12, and Chourdoir was 63rd overall and 24th in the college division in 36:28.90.
The women had three individuals took part in the women’s 5K distance classic college division, paced by a 14th place finish (19:55.66; 32nd overall) by junior Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.), 20th place finish (22:03.48; 72nd overall) by sophomore Mary Kozloski (Green Bay, Wis.) and 21st place finish (22:35.11; 80th overall) by White. Billett and Thobe competed in the U20 division finishing in 12th and 13th, respectively. Billett’s time of 21:21.78 was good for 56th overall, while Thobe’s time of 21:41.42 was 63rd overall.
Select individuals will hit the trails again to start the new year at the US Cross Country Championships at Soldier Hollow, Utah from January 4-8.
