GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – For the second-consecutive week, Green Bay women’s basketball freshman Tesha Buck (Red Wing, Minn.) was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Buck becomes just the second player in Horizon League history to earn the accolade in back-to-back weeks. Loyola’s Taylor Johnson did it on February 18 and 25 of last season, the first year the weekly award was handed out. UIC’s Rachel Story was named the conference player of the week.
Starting both games of the TD Bank Classic hosted by the University of Vermont last weekend, Buck averaged 8.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals, 3.5 assists and 0.5 blocks in 29.0 minutes. She finished the weekend shooting 35.7 percent (5-14) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-9) from three and 62.5 percent (5-8) from the charity stripe. She also recorded a 2.3 assist/turnover ratio for the weekend.
In the tourney opener against Siena, Buck had a career-high seven rebounds, five steals and one block in addition to nine points as the Phoenix went on to win, 63-52. She followed that performance with eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists as the Phoenix captured the TD Bank Classic title with a 74-57 win over host Vermont.
Buck has started all five games for the Phoenix this season, and currently leads the team in assists (4.4), steals (2.0) and minutes (31.2) while ranking second in scoring average (9.6) and rebounding (4.6). In the conference, she stands at the top with a 3.1 assist/turnover ratio, second in assists and sixth in steals. She is the only freshman to rank in the top-10 in any of the conference categories.
Green Bay returns to action on Friday at the Maine Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted by the University of Maine. The Phoenix faces William and Mary at 6 p.m. CST on Friday, and will take on either Maine or Massachusetts on Saturday.
