GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Due to the unexpected cancellation of the HBCU Tip-Off Championship, the Green Bay men’s basketball team has been forced to change its early season schedule, head coach Brian Wardle announced on Tuesday. The Phoenix will now open the season at home, hosting Northern Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Kress Events Center.
The Phoenix was slated to open the season Nov. 8-10 with games against Arkansas Pine Bluff (Nov. 8) and Texas Southern (Nov. 10) at the HBCU Tip-Off Championship in Atlanta, but tournament organizers informed participating teams on Friday that the event was being cancelled.
“We were extremely disappointed to hear the tournament was being cancelled, especially for our players because the event would have been a great way to start the season on and off the floor,” said head coach Brian Wardle. “We thought it would provide a valuable student-athlete experience, and it is unfortunate for all involved that the tournament will not occur.”
Due to the cancellation, the Phoenix will now open its 2013-14 campaign at the Kress Events Center, welcoming Northern Michigan to Green Bay. The contest will be the second regular season game that Green Bay has played at the Kress Center. The Phoenix opened the 2010-11 season with a 75-36 victory over Minnesota Duluth in Wardle’s debut as a head coach.
All ticket package purchasers will receive a complimentary ticket to the game against Northern Michigan. Tickets will be available beginning Friday and can be purchased at all Ticket Star locations, on TicketStarOnline.com or by calling 800.895.0071. All tickets will be general admission with adults tickets sold for $5 and youth tickets will be $3.
Green Bay last played Northern Michigan on Nov. 18, 2009, defeating the Wildcats 70-64 in the home opener at the Resch Center. Including nine-straight wins, the Phoenix leads the all-time series 19-10.
“Despite the unexpected circumstances, we are excited to play another game in front of our home fans and have the chance to play a game on campus,” said Wardle. “We hope to see lots of students in the crowd helping us begin the season.”
