INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior Grace Abitz (Appleton, Wis.) carded a 79 on Monday – her low collegiate round as a member of the Green Bay women’s golf team – to lead the Phoenix to sit in sixth place after the opening round of the Butler Fall Invitational.
Green Bay shot a team score of 327 to rank in sixth place in the 10-team field, ahead of fellow Horizon League foes UIC and Valparaiso. Purdue, with a score of 296, enters Tuesday with a commanding 16-stroke lead over the host Bulldogs (312) while Indiana State (314), Loyola (320) and Eastern Illinois (325) round out the top five.
Abitz shot a 39 on the front side and a 40 on the back to lead the Phoenix and sit in a tie for ninth place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Sophomore Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) is one stroke back of Abitz in a tie for 15th place after an opening 80. Katie Pokrandt (t29, 83), Molly Fassbinder (t36, 85) and Sierah Gurske (t48, 89) rounded out the Phoenix scores on Monday.
