HARTFORD, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomore Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) carded six birdies and opened with a 1-under par 71 on Sunday, leading the Green Bay men’s golf team in the first round of the Erin Hills Intercollegiate hosted by Marquette.
After a team score of 7-over 295, Green Bay is tied with Wisconsin for 10th place. Stanford leads the impressive 14-team field after an 8-under par 280, with UCLA and SMU tied for second (286) and Oregon State and Northwestern are tied for fourth (289).
Kiela is three strokes off the lead in a tie for seventh place after his opening round 71. Marquette’s Zach Gaugert, Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers and SMU’s Harry Higgs are tied for first after carding rounds of 4-under par 68.
Junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) is one stroke back of Kiela after shooting an even par 72 with five birdies. Junior Joseph Collard (Marinette, Wis.) posted a 75 while senior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) shot a 77 and redshirt freshman Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.) carded an 80 to round out the Phoenix scores.
