GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay women’s tennis head coach Sara Schubring has added Green Bay native Sommer May as an assistant coach, the team announced Wednesday. May, a Green Bay native, is currently ranked the No. 3 player in the Wisconsin Women’s Open Singles by the United States Tennis Association.
“I’m thrilled to have Sommer and her accomplished tennis background join our staff,” Schubring said. “She brings great competitive playing experience at the Division I and USTA levels, and shares our program values—which will make her a great role model and teacher for our student-athletes.”
A Green Bay native, May (née LaValley) graduated from Notre Dame Academy where she was an all-conference performer and two-time WIAA State Champion. From there, she headed to Marquette, playing one season with a 10-18 singles record in the 2000-01 season. She graduated from Minnesota in 2004 with a degree in psychology.
Still active on the court, May holds the No. 3 ranking in the USTA Wisconsin Women’s Open Singles division and posted an impressive 7-1 record this summer in level 4.5 matches—just two levels below the national circuit. In 2010 and 2011, she held the No. 1 ranking in the state.
When May isn’t on the court, she’s a proud mother of two and an active volunteer with various organizations in the Green Bay area. May and her husband, Jon, reside in Ledgeview with their twins, Kennedy and Charles.
