CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Joseph Collard (Marinette, Wis.) led the field in pars with 15, and after a birdie at No. 17, his consistent round of 1-over par 73 helped the Green Bay men’s golf team sit in first place after 18 holes of the CSU Invitational hosted by Chicago State at Harborside International Golf Club. Collard is tied with three others in the field for first place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Green Bay’s team score of 298 left it three shots clear of Texas Pan American (301) as the Phoenix attempts to win for the third time in four events to start the 2013-14 season. Chicago State (308), Loyola (309) and Eastern Illinois (310) round out the bunched up field.
Collard parred 13 of his first 14 holes on Monday, and after a bogey on the 15th hole, birdied the 407-yard par-4 to card a 73 and sit atop the leaderboard. Collard and three others lead a group of five golfers by one stroke, including Green Bay sophomore Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) and redshirt freshman Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.).
Kiela played the first eight holes in 4-over par before making four birdies the rest of the way, including birdies on the final two holes. Du Chateau was 3-over par after 13 holes but carded birdies on three of the final five holes.
Senior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) and junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) rounded out the Phoenix golfers, posting rounds of 77 and 79, respectively.
Tuesday’s final 18 holes at the 7,164-yard par-72 course will get underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
