EVANSVILLE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s soccer team used two second half goals to lift itself over NJIT, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in its second match of the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic, hosted by the University of Evansville.
The win improved the Phoenix to 4-2-2 on the season. Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.), Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Taurean Greenidge (Bridgetown, Barbados) were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts during the weekend.
For the second-consecutive match, the Phoenix found itself in an early deficit. A Green Bay foul in the box in the 20th minute led to a penalty kick opportunity for the Highlanders, and Marko Drljic drilled the shot home for a 1-0 advantage.
Despite trailing on the scoreboard, Green Bay went into halftime with a 7-3 advantage in shots including a 4-2 edge on goal.
Tyler Swanner (Glen Carbon, Ill.) got the scoring started for Green bay in the 56th minute. Collecting a pass from Talery, Swanner took a shot from 10 yards out and snuck it inside the near post to tie the match at 1-1.
Offensive star of the weekend Krenzien kept his hot streak going netting the game-winning goal in the 65th minute. Dribbling around an NJIT defender at the top of the box, Krenzien sent a low shot past keeper David Tuchinsky to put the Phoenix up for good, 2-1.
Green Bay dominated shots, 18-7, including 9-5 on goal while also leading corners, 8-1. Krenzien, Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.) and AJ Patterson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) each had three shots for the offense. Kyle Ihn (Wales, Wis.) played all 90:00, making four saves.
The Phoenix return to the pitch on October 1, traveling to North Carolina to face UNC-Asheville.
