TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Three second-half goals helped lift host Indiana State over the Green Bay women’s soccer team, as the Sycamores ran away with a 4-0 triumph on Friday evening at Memorial Stadium.
With the win, the Sycamores improved to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Phoenix dropped to 2-2-1.
"It was a bad night at the office," said head coach Trevor Warren. "We didn't play well and Indiana State was able to take advantage of the chances they created and put them away.
"It was a disappointing night against a good program, but we will rebound and look to turn it around on Sunday at Drake."
Setting the tempo for the match early, Indiana State took control as it outshot Green Bay, 7-4, including 5-1 in shots on goal in the first half. Netting the lone goal of the opening stanza in the 24th minute, Sycamore forward Taylor Reed headed a corner kick from Kayla Welch to put the squad up, 1-0.
Adding her second goal of the match in the 57th minute, Taylor Reed settled a pass from Kate Johnson to push the advantage to 2-0. The Sycamores put two quick tallies on the board in the 61st and 65th minutes from Abby Reed and Sydney Lovelace, respectively, for the final 4-0 margin.
A strong offensive performance was supported by a suffocating Sycamore defense that allowed nine shots by the Phoenix for the match, including just one shot in the second half until the 77th minute. Green Bay looked poised to strike at that point as consecutive shots by Abby Juzwik (Madison, Wis.), Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) and Rhiana Stelter (Waukesha, Wis.) forced Indiana State keeper Abby Keller into save situations.
For the match the Phoenix owned a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, while Indiana State led in shots, 12-9. Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) played the entirety, recording three saves.
The Phoenix returns to action on Sunday, taking on Drake in Des Moines at 1 p.m.
