GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) and freshman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) have been named to the 2013 Softball All-Horizon League Teams, the league office announced on Tuesday. Hrncar was given Second Team All-Horizon League honors while Michalkiewicz was named to the All-Newcomer team.
Hrncar wrapped up the most successful season of her collegiate career in Green Bay’s final series against Detroit last weekend, finishing 4-10 with two runs scored and a walk in the three-game series. She played the 2013 campaign in honor of her mother, Tami, who passed away following a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Hrncar finished the year batting .284 with three triples, 29 total hits and a 1.000 fielding percentage—all career highs. Her three triples were the second-most hit in the Horizon League this season and tied for the eighth most in a single season in program history.
The All-Newcomer nod is the second award this week for Michalkiewicz, who was named the Horizon League player of the week on Monday. Michalkiewicz led the Phoenix and finished second in the Horizon League with a program-best .398 batting average. She finished second in program history and third in the Horizon League with a .664 slugging percentage while setting Green Bay’s single season on-base percentage record at .458. She led all Horizon League players with 14 doubles and hit six homers on the year—the third-most in a single season in program history.
Upon graduation later this month Hrncar plans to attend graduate school for physical therapy. As a sophomore next season Michalkiewicz will look to continue her record-breaking ways and lead a Green Bay roster that returns 17 players from the 2013 season.
