GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Toronto native Tevin Findlay has officially joined the Green Bay men’s basketball recruiting Class of 2013, as the versatile combo guard signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play for the Phoenix on Saturday afternoon, head coach Brian Wardle announced on Sunday.
Findlay is the third signee in the Green Bay recruiting class that will be joining the program next fall. He joins high school teammates Turner Botz and Kenneth Lowe of Little Chute High School, who signed NLIs in the early signing period in November.
“It is a great situation for me. When I went on my visit, I really felt that I was so at home and so comfortable with all of the guys and the coaches. They embraced me from the start. I could really see myself fitting in right away and helping out right away, and that is what you want to do on the college level.
“One really exciting thing about playing for Coach Wardle is his style of play. He likes to get up and down and talks about pushing the ball, and as a guard that just makes your eyes light up. The coaches are really great guys who really know the game, and as a young player that is what you need to be around day in and day out if you want to succeed, grow and reach your full potential.”
A 6-foot-4 combo guard, Findlay spent the 2012-13 season at IMG Academy, a postgraduate preparatory school in Bradenton, Fla. Findlay averaged 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals per game while helping IMG to more than 20 wins. Findlay’s team, which featured four other players who have signed to play Division I basketball, competed against some of the top junior colleges in Florida.
“Getting Tevin finally is a major addition for us,” said Wardle. "We have been recruiting him heavily for a year and a half and we tried to get him to Green Bay a season ago, but he wanted to take one more year at IMG to keep developing his playmaking ability under a very good coach. We kept recruiting him throughout this season, and we are very excited to have Tevin join our program. With his personality and work ethic, he will fit right in with the guys we have in the locker room. He is a good student who is coachable and tough and can play multiple positions. Tevin’s best years are ahead of him, and I can’t wait to help him develop his talent.”
Findlay graduated high school from Quality Education Academy in Winston Salem, N.C. He played AAU Basketball for CIA Bounce out of Toronto, the best AAU program in Canada, where Findlay played alongside Syracuse signee Tyler Ennis.
“This is a great opportunity for him to play at Green Bay and join that program,” said IMG Academy head coach Loren Jackson. “I have known Brian for a long time and I think the system and style that he has implemented at Green Bay will really be beneficial for Tevin. It is a great fit for him because of the style Green Bay plays and he has great size, can really get to the rim and can play both guard positions. Tevin should give Coach Wardle a lot of versatility. He is a great kid who works extremely hard on his game and has a really great personality.”
Tevin Findlay Quotes
On meeting the players: “One thing that I really picked up when I was in Green Bay was everyone was so focused and everyone had a bigger goal. That is my mentality and I think because of that I should mesh right in quickly. I got the feeling of a brotherhood, and that is what you want and hope for when you go to college.”
On developing: “I saw how [Keifer Sykes] has improved, and I know how much he has worked on his jumpshot and became an all-conference player in just two seasons. He is a good example for me because I want to improve just as fast.”
On achieving the goal of playing college basketball: “My mom is happy and that is first and foremost. I have worked really to get here. This seems like the light at the end of the tunnel, even though it is just a start and a new beginning, I have worked really hard to get to this point.”
On what Green Bay fans can expect from him: “I play hard and get after it every possession. I am very vocal and confident which gives me good leadership skills, and I think I am fun to play with and fun to watch.”
