GREEN BAY, WIS. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After playing 37 games away from home this season, the Green Bay softball team (12-25, 5-12 HL) will finally compete in front of its home crowd in the final series of the 2013 regular season. With a playoff berth on the line, the Phoenix will host Detroit (5-42, 2-16 HL) in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday before closing the series at noon on Sunday.
Currently in seventh place in the Horizon League standings, the Phoenix needs to sweep the eighth-place Titans and also needs Youngstown State to get swept by Valparaiso in order to qualify for the 2013 Horizon League Tournament. With a Youngstown State win or cancelled game or a Green Bay loss, the Penguins will eliminate the Phoenix from postseason contention.
Green Bay will play in honor of those who have faught or are still fighting breast cancer in Saturday’s doubleheader. Prior to the first game, the family of senior Jess Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) will throw out the first pitch and share remarks with the players, staff and fans of the team. Green Bay has played this season in memory of Hrncar’s mother, Tami, who passed away from breast cancer last October.
Following game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Phoenix will hold a brief Parent’s Day ceremony and recognize each player and their parents.
Prior to the start of Sunday’s series and season finale against the Titans, Green Bay will honor its highly decorated, six-member senior class.
This weekend’s series was originally the third of three home series on the 2013 schedule. However, poor field conditions and both snow and rain forced the previous two series to be changed from home to road contests. Saturday’s forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of morning showers with a high of 67 degrees while Sunday is predicted to have a high of 67 with only a 10 percent chance of rain. With a sweep of Detroit and a Valparaiso sweep of Youngstown State, Green Bay will compete in the 2013 Horizon League Tournament as the No. 6 seed next week. With a loss or a Youngstown State win, Green Bay’s season will come to a close on Sunday.
