GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s basketball team will appear in the 2013 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout from Nov. 27-30 at Sullivan Arena, head coach Brian Wardle announced on Thursday. The eight-team field in the 36th annual event also includes tournament host Alaska Anchorage, Harvard, TCU, Denver, Indiana State, Tulsa and Pepperdine.
“We are extremely excited to be invited to this prestigious tournament, the Great Alaska Shootout,” said Wardle. “This event adds three more challenging games to our 2013-14 non-conference schedule, and also provides a tournament atmosphere and neutral-site games with some really good programs.”
Green Bay will open the tournament against Pepperdine on Thursday, Nov. 28. Winners of the first-round contests will meet in the semifinals with losing teams moving to the consolation round. The winner of the Green Bay-Pepperdine matchup will face the winner of Harvard-Denver on Friday, Nov. 29.
Including the Phoenix, five of the teams in the field appeared in postseason play in 2012-13. Harvard won the Ivy League and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament while Denver tied for first in the Western Athletic Conference and played in the NIT. Pepperdine finished the 2012-13 season with a 12-18 record and a 4-12 mark in the West Coast Conference.
The Phoenix previously appeared in the Great Alaska Shootout in 1993, finishing in sixth place with a 1-2 record.
The Shootout is the longest-running regular season college basketball tournament in the nation, taking place every Thanksgiving in Anchorage since 1978. Tip-off times and television coverage will be announced at a later date.
