GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s and women’s golf teams open play in the 2013 Horizon League Championships on Friday morning, with both Phoenix squads looking to build off strong performances. The event will be held from Friday-Sunday at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The men’s 54-hole tournament will be held at the El Campeon Course, a par-72, 6,770-yard track which has hosted the tournament each of the past two seasons. The women’s tournament, also a 54-hole event with 18 holes played each day, has moved to the par-72, 5,817-yard Las Colinas Course.
Live scoring will be available through Golfstat for both tournaments. Follow the men’s action and the women’s action beginning with 7:30 a.m. tee times for each round.
On the men’s side, Green Bay opens the Horizon League Championship after winning the weather-shortened Butler Spring Invite in its last outing. Sophomore Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) won the individual title with a 1-under par 71.
Green Bay finished in second place in the 2012 Horizon League Championships, and seniors Chad Ebert (Kenosha, Wis.) and Cam Fuller (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) have especially fond memories of the course. Ebert won the individual title at the 2012 championship, finishing the 54 holes at 6-over par and two shots clear of a tie for second place which included Fuller.
Joining Ebert, Fuller and Boockmeier on the Phoenix squad will be freshman Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) and junior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.). Ozga and Boockmeier lead the squad with a scoring average of 76.3 while Kiela sports an average of 76.7.
The Phoenix women finished in second place in its last outing, competing at the Loyola Invite. Freshman Katie Pokrandt (Eau Claire, Wis.), who on Thursday was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, led Green Bay in third place. Pokrandt leads the Phoenix with a scoring average of 82.1 and has a season-best round of 75 and four top-10s.
Junior Grace Abitz (Appleton, Wis.) has posted four top-10 finishes in just six events this season and sports a scoring average of 83.2. Freshmen Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) and Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) and senior Christina De Boer (Onalaska, Wis.) will round out the five participants for Green Bay this weekend. The Phoenix finished sixth at the 2012 Horizon League Championships.
