GREEN BAY, Wis.(GreenBayPhoenix.com) –
Playing in its first home match in nearly two months, the Green Bay men’s tennis team rolled past Youngstown State 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Western Racquet and Fitness Club. The Phoenix improves to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League play with the win, while the Penguins fall to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

“We came out with a lot of energy in all three doubles spots today and the message was to continue that in singles play, and the guys did that,” Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas said. “We jumped on them right away and I think we caught them by surprise. It was great playing at home and having a lot of fans here. This is where we practice and where the guys are comfortable on the courts. It was a big win today and we’re looking forward to keeping it going against a very good Cleveland State team tomorrow.”

Green Bay got things started with a dominant performance in doubles action, sweeping each of the three matches. The senior duo of Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) and Craig Cox (Surrey, England) rolled past YSU’s Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli 8-4 at No. 1, while Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) also won 8-4 at No. 2. The Phoenix completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 by Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.).

Singles was more of the same, as Green Bay won each of the six contests in straight sets. Cox made it 2-0 in favor of the home team by dominating Felipe Rosa 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, while Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) and Scott clinched the victory with wins at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0) and No. 5 (6-2, 6-2), respectively.

After a hard-fought battle in the first set with YSU’s Silviu Mistreanu, Tenzer used a dominant second set to close out a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 spot. Finkenbrink and Isaaks also earned singles wins for Green Bay, as Finkenbrink won 6-3, 6-0 over Hagn at No. 2 and Isaaks took a 6-3, 7-5 result against Rodrigo Campos at No. 6.

The Phoenix continues its Horizon League slate with another home match on Sunday morning, welcoming rival Cleveland State to Western Racquet at 10 a.m.
