GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After going 4-0 in singles and doubles action and leading his team to a pair of conference road victories over the weekend, Green Bay men’s tennis senior Craig Cox (Surrey, England) was selected as the Horizon League Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday along with Cleveland State’s Ali Shabib. It marks the second weekly award of Cox’s career.
Cox won twice at No. 1 doubles and picked up singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots as the Phoenix defeated Valparaiso 6-1 on Friday and UIC 6-1 on Saturday to improve to 12-6 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play.
Against the Crusaders on Friday, the Phoenix senior paired up with classmate Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) for an exciting 8-7 (4) doubles victory before taking down Chris Baum 6-2, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 singles. Cox and Finkenbrink combined again to clinch the doubles point at UIC on Saturday, beating Alexander Raa and Isaac Lloveras 9-7 in the No. 1 slot. Cox then rolled past the Flames’ Christopher Cole 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
The Phoenix next begins a stretch of three straight matches at home, beginning with a contest against Youngstown State on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. at Western Racquet and Fitness.
