INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Freshmen Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) and Gene Kiela III (Plymouth, Wis.) led Green Bay on Saturday as the Phoenix men’s and women’s golf teams opened the spring season at Butler. The men dropped a dual meet to the Bulldogs 317-302 while the women fell 333-308.
Head coach Lucas Hana’s women’s team featured four freshmen on Saturday, with Grunder making three birdies and nine pars as part of an 8-over par 81. Fellow freshman Katie Pokrandt (Eau Claire, Wis.) was a stroke back at 82 while sophomore Renee Christenson (Greenleaf, Wis.) and freshman Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) shot matching 85s.
On the men’s side, Kiela carded a 5-over 77 that included two birdies. The Phoenix freshman also made 10 pars in finishing in a tie for third place. Senior Chad Ebert (Kenosha, Wis.) also had two birdies on his round and shot a 6-over par 78. Junior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) and sophomore Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) each finished with matching 81s while senior Cam Fuller (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) rounded out the scorers with an 85.
