GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After helping the Phoenix to a 3-0 start to its
spring season over the weekend, Green Bay sophomore Michael Tenzer
(Neuried, Germany) picked up Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors
on Tuesday for the period of Jan. 21-27. It marked the second accolade of
Tenzer's young career, as he also
won as a freshman on Feb. 22, 2012.
Tenzer went unbeaten in singles (2-0) and doubles (2-0)
play as Green Bay defeated
Western Michigan 4-3 on Friday, IPFW
7-0 on Saturday and IUPUI
7-0 on Sunday. In the season-opening victory over 2012 NCAA Tournament team
WMU, it was Tenzer's come-from-behind win over Ross VanderPloeg (3-6, 6-2, 6-2)
at No. 2 singles that propelled the Phoenix to the one-point victory. The
sophomore also won at the No. 1 singles spot in Sunday's rout of IUPUI.
In doubles action, the 2012 First Team All-Horizon League
pick teamed up with freshman Rowan Isaaks (London, England) for a pair of wins. Tenzer and Isaaks edged
VanderPloeg and Andrew Cahn 8-7 (7-5) at No. 2 in the win over the Broncos,
then went on to win 8-4 at No. 1 against IPFW's Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang
the following day. The Phoenix duo's match at No. 2 against IUPUI went
unfinished as a result of Green Bay clinching the doubles point.
Tenzer and the Phoenix have another busy weekend ahead,
as they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on UMKC on Saturday at 5 p.m. before
facing Drake on Sunday at 11 a.m.
