GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's golf team entered the 2012-13 season with the defending Horizon League champion and runner-up on its experienced roster, but the Phoenix showed off its impressive depth in two ways on Tuesday at the 36-hole Green Bay Invitational at Green Bay Country Club.

Junior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) on the Green Bay A team carded a 1-under 71 to come from behind and win overall individual medalist honors, and the Green Bay B team (615) edged the A team (616) by one shot to win the Division I team title. Butler finished just one more stroke back with a 617 while Chicago State was a distant fourth (782).

On a day when the field's scoring average increased significantly, Ozga's card finished three shots better than the second-best round in the 61-person men's field. The junior, whose 4-over 76 on Monday left him five shots off the lead, started on number two and had a blistering start. Ozga was 2-under on the day heading to the back nine but fell back to even-par with a bogey on the 18th hole, his second-to-last of the tourney. Ozga found the middle of the fairway on his closing hole and rolled in his birdie putt to cap his 71.

Ozga's birdie on his last hole proved to be crucial as he finished with a two-day total of 3-over 147, just one shot clear of Indianapolis' Jon Jozefowski's total of 148 (73-75). Ozga concluded the 36-hole event with a tournament-high eight birdies.

Freshman Kyle Shafer (Spring Valley, Wis.) had the next best Phoenix round of the day for the Phoenix B team, shaving eight shots off his score from Monday with a 3-over 75. Shafer had two birdies in his round and clsoed the DI tournament in a tie for tenth place (83-75=158).

Shafer's round helped the Phoenix B team shoot a 309 on Tuesday and take the title from the A team which included Ozga and seniors Chad Ebert (Kenosha, Wis.) and Cam Fuller (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.). Sophomore Chad Bonis (New Berlin, Wis.) shot a 76 on Tuesday despite a double bogey on his last hole of the day. Bonis finished second on the Phoenix and in third place in the DI field with a 9-over 153.

Ozga, Shafer, Bonis and junior Sam Weber (Heartland, Wis.) were the lone Phoenix golfers to break 80 in the difficult windy conditions. Tyler Schmidt (t4th, 73-81=154), Joseph Collard (7th, 75-80=155), Tom Boockmeier (t8th, 75-82=157), Fuller (t8th, 74-83=157) and Ebert (t10th, 78-80=158) all finished in the top-10.

Indianapolis won the overall title and the non-Division I event with a two-day total of 597 with Green Bay B finishing second and Green Bay A third.

Green Bay will next be in action at the Job Piper Invitational, a tournament hosted by Bowling Green State University on Sept. 17-18.
