Green Bay head basketball coach Brian Wardle quickly named the first member of his staff after he was hired in April 2010, and Wardle turned to college teammate Brian Barone. Wardle and Barone were college teammates at Marquette University for two seasons (1999-00, 2000-01).

"Brian is a great basketball mind who comes from a highly-regarded basketball family," Wardle said at the time of the hiring. "He is a multi-dimensional coach who has brought a lot of new ideas and enthusiasm to our program. Having a former teammate and a great friend on the staff is a blessing."

During his time at Green Bay, Barone has made an imprint on the program through his coaching and recruiting. In his first few weeks on the job, Barone helped the recruitment of All-Horizon League big man Alec Brown.

A former college point guard, Barone's tutelage helped Keifer Sykes have one of the top freshman seasons in Phoenix history in 2011-12. Sykes earned All-Horizon League newcomer team honors as a freshman after averaging 11.2 points. Barone helped Sykes' adjustment to the college game, and the freshman responded by averaging 14.7 points in the team's last 17 games.

Barone spent the previous two years at Indiana University as the Hoosiers' director of basketball operations/video coordinator, working under his college head coach Tom Crean. He went to IU in 2008 after serving the 2007-08 campaign as the coordinator of basketball operations and video coordinator at Marquette.

Barone's first Division I coaching experience came at Illinois State University. He spent four seasons (from 2003-04 through 2006-07) as an assistant coach for the Redbirds where he helped resurrect a program that had just eight wins the year prior to his arrival.

Barone also has experience in the junior college ranks. He spent one season (2002-03) at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan., and one year (2001-02) at Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Fla. He helped guide the Patriots to an overall record of 21-11 and a Mid-Florida Conference Tournament Championship. The squad also advanced to the NJCAA Region VII semifinals.

Playing for his father, Tony Sr., Barone played his first two collegiate seasons at Texas A&M University. He was tabbed honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore following the 1997-98 season after finishing among the league's top five in assists and steals. He also received GTE Big XII Academic All-Conference accolades as well.

He transferred to Marquette for his final two campaigns, making his debut in 1999-00 after sitting out one season as a transfer. Barone served as team captain during his tenure and was also named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team.

Barone earned his bachelor's degree in communications from Marquette in 2000 and completed his master's work at MU in the same field in 2002.

Basketball runs in Barone's family. His father, Tony Sr., played collegiately at Duke and was the head coach at Creighton, Texas A&M and the Memphis Grizzlies. His brother, Tony, Jr., has been a college assistant coach and works as a scout in the NBA.

He and his wife, Mimi, were married in August of 2007 and have a son, Carson, and a daughter, Ava.
