Nordic Ski Competes at CCSA Conference Championships
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay Nordic Ski team concluded its 2016 season this past weekend at the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Conference Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Phoenix men placed in fifth overall with 117 points over the two-day span, while the women ended in sixth with 85 points against a six-school field that included Northern Michigan, Alaska-Fairbanks, Michigan Tech, St. Scholastica, St. Olaf and St. Cloud State.
The NMU Wildcats won both the men’s and women’s titles with 172 points and 170 points, respectively, which featured the women’s 10K and men’s 15K races on Saturday followed with the women’s 5K and men’s 10K freestyle on Sunday.
Phoenix senior Matt Nichols paced the men’s team in both races, recording a pair of top-10 finishes. The Wausau, Wis., native finished 9th overall in the 15K race in 38:16.8, and followed it up with an eighth place result in the 10K in 21:12.8.
Junior Kyle Marshall (Shoreview, Minn.) also concluded his season strong with two top-20s, placing 14th in the 15K race in 38:36.4—his highest result of the season— and 17th in the 10K in 21:45.6, while Jake Ajax (Blaine, Minn.) ended 23rd and 27th, respectively.
On the women’s side, junior Bree Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) battled through the pack to finish 18th in the 10K race for the best women's result of the season, while Kayla Billett (East Bethel, Minn.) finished in 31st (30:14.4) and Katie Burger (Hayward, Wis.) 33rd (31:23.2).
In the 5K distance, Mucha once again led Green Bay finishing in 25th, while Billett (28th) and Burger (32nd) rounded out the top three.
Green Bay will now shifts its sights to the NCAA Central Region Skiing Championships, which are slated to held this upcoming weekend from Feb. 20-21 in Ishpeming, Mich.
