Nordic Ski Participates At Michigan Tech Invitational
Houghton, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – For the second time in three weekends, the Green Bay Nordic Ski team competed in Houghton, Mich., where it went head-to-head with conference opponents at the 2016 Michigan Tech Invitational.
The women’s 5K and men’s 10K skate were held on Saturday followed with the women’s classic 15K and men’s classic 20K on Sunday. The Phoenix men placed in fourth overall and the women fifth against Northern Michigan, St. Scholastica, Michigan Tech, St. Olaf and St. Cloud State.
Phoenix senior Matt Nichols continued his strong season by pacing the men’s team in the 10K freestyle, placing 12th overall in 28:11.3, while junior Kyle Marshall also finished inside the top-15th (15) in 28:42.4 and fellow junior Jake Bauer rounded out the top-20 competitors in 20th place (29:09.7).
In the classic 20K race, Green Bay was dealt adversity early on, including a pile up at the starting line, broken bindings and broken poles. Despite it all, Nichols ended 11th (1:00:43.8), while Marshall gutted out a 20th place finish (1:03:26.5) and sophomore Jake Ajax four spots behind in 24th (1:05:14.3).
On the women’s side, junior Cassie Thobe placed just outside the top-20 in the 5K distance (21th) to lead the Phoenix, while three others – Kayla Billett (22nd, 17:20.0), Bree Mucha (23rd, 17.26.8) and Katie Burger (24th, 17:30.1) – placed right behind.
In the classic 15K distance, Thobe once again led Green Bay finishing in 24th, while Burger (27th) and Billett (29th) rounded out the top three.
Green Bay will now shifts its sights to the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Conference Championships, which are set to take place in two weeks from Feb. 13-14 in Minneapolis.
