Green Bay Nordic Skiing Prepared for NCAA Regional
Green Bay skiers have had the opportunity to accumulate points toward a spot at the NCAA Skiing Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y., and this regional meet is the next step in advancing.
The Phoenix traveled to Marquette, Mich. last weekend to get some practice in on the course there. Head coach Steve Teclaw says the team knows what it needs to do to move forward.
“This is obviously the biggest weekend of our season and we’re preparing for it as such,” said Teclaw. “Mentally we’re aligned that we need to leave everything out on the race course. Our goals for the season are still on the table, but 110 percent is required to get there, no excuses. If we’re not collapsing at the finish then I know we haven’t given it our all.”
Green Bay is led on the men’s side by redshirt sophomore Kyle Marshall (Roseville, Minn.). Marshall has recorded the best finish for a Phoenix skier at four meets this season, including a sixth-place finish in the 10k college skate race at the Twin Cities Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. in late January.
That was the best weekend of the season for the Phoenix, with fellow redshirt sophomore Bree Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska), placing 10th in the college skate race.
This will be an emotional weekend for several Phoenix seniors. This is the last crop of student-athletes that was recruited by late Green Bay Nordic skiing coach Butch Reimer, who coached the Phoenix until his untimely death in 2010.
“This will be his last class racing and I know that group wants to put up a solid performance for him,” said Teclaw. “The women’s team will be wearing their Butch Reimer memorial race suits on Sunday in memory of him.”
Reimer began the Nordic skiing program at Green Bay in 1989. He was named the 2010 Midwest Nordic Ski Coach of the Year and sent more than 44 student-athletes to the NCAA Skiing Championships during his coaching career. He died in October of 2010 after a battle with leukemia.
