Green Bay Nordic Skiing Wraps Regular Season
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay Phoenix Nordic skiing team competed at the CCSA Championships over the Valentine’s Day weekend.
The Phoenix was paced by its women’s team of Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska), Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) and sophomore Bree Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska), which placed third in the championship segment. These standings are calculated by combining team scores from the CCSA Sprints and Relays from the previous weekend at competition in Duluth, Minn., and the scores from this weekend’s races at the CCSA Distance Championships.
In individual competition, Kailey Mucha was Green Bay’s top finisher on the women’s side, placing 27th in the 5K race. Sophomore Kyle Marshall (Roseville, Minn.) claimed the best men’s finish by placing 28th in the 10K race.
Extreme weather conditions made for a tough weekend on the trails, as competition was halted at one point to allow temperatures to climb back above the legal level of -4 degrees Fahrenheit.
“I think the athletes handled the temperatures and 25 mile-per-hour winds well,” said coach Steve Teclaw. “It’s something everyone is fairly used to and it never seems to deter their mental game.”
The team will now prepare for the NCAA Central Regional Championships in Ishpeming, Mich. beginning on Saturday, Feb. 28.
“We’re looking forward to two weeks of training and regionals at the end of the month,” said Teclaw. “We’re all in for that weekend and need to make significant strides.”
The Phoenix has competed in several NCAA qualifiers throughout the season, and will have to accumulate enough points by the end of next weekend’s regional competition to advance to the NCAA Skiing Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. March 11-14.
