Phoenix Nordic Skiing Competes in CCSA Relays
DULUTH, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay’s women’s relay team made it to the podium at the CCSA Sprint and Relay Championships in Duluth.
The team of seniors Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska), Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) and sophomore Bree Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) placed third in the Championship standings of the women’s three-by-seven kilometer freestyle relay race.
“All three had respectable laps, they showed progressive effort,” said head coach Steve Teclaw. “Hanne had the best race of the three, she had a lot left in the tank after the first lap and was able to put time on the other girls.” Guthrie skied the second fastest middle leg for the Phoenix. “All in all it’s a fun weekend,” said Teclaw.
Green Bay’s men’s relay team of senior Chris Nichols (Wausau, Wis.), junior Ben Lindberg (Rochester, Minn.) and sophomore Jake Bauer (Richfield, Minn.) finished eighth, and saw a couple of its best performers sit out.
“The men’s team struggled with Jake Ajax on the bench and Kyle Marshall taking the weekend easy due to a bit of sickness,” said Teclaw. “We knew going into the weekend that we weren’t going to race Kyle in the relays. His past two weekends have been really solid and we didn’t want to mess up the final two big weekends.”
In individual competition, Bree Mucha, Kailey Mucha, Chris Nichols and freshman Maddie McKeefry (Andover, Minn.) all qualified. Bree Mucha paced the women’s squad, placing 10th overall. Nichols claimed the best individual finish for the men’s team, placing 15th overall.
