BROWN DEER, Wis. – The Green Bay Swimming and Diving Team spent their first weekend as a full squad at the All-Wisconsin Invite. The meet was unscored, but offered the opportunity for racing Division 1, 2, and 3 collegiate teams throughout the state.

The highlight of the meet was the divers’ efforts on the one meter and three meter boards, with juniors Bailey Wagner and Michael Klemm each dominating both of their events. In the men’s three meter, the men particularly shined, with Klemm, senior James Wise, freshman Derrick Prenot, and freshman Josh Yahr taking first, second, third, and fifth, respectively.

Diving coach Tom Stover had this to say about Wagner and Klemm: “Their margin of victory over the field in each event was huge and their point totals surpassed the required NCAA Zone qualifying scores. Overall, a great start to the season for the Phoenix diving team.”

Sophomore Eli Broman, senior Claire Friederick, and senior Austin Sturdivant, were the Phoenix swimmers that came away with first-place finishes. Broman seized the men’s 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.24. Friederick continued her winning ways in the women’s 100 yard freestyle with her 53.09. Sturdivant grabbed victory in the men’s 200 yard breaststroke in 2:11.40. All three of today’s individual winners earned season-best times.

Head swim coach Reed Robelot said, “Getting our team to an extremely fast pool in order to race and dive against solid Wisconsin college talent is always a good experience. Many of our swimmers saw the proof of their hard work and focus today. Others were able to plant a flag and mark their progress upward. A few need to use this meet as a call to action.”

There were numerous second and third place finishes throughout the swimming competition as well. Notably, the men’s 200 fly was the only sweep of the meet, with Broman, junior Alec Rutkowski, and freshman Riley Darling going 1-2-3. Rutkowski posted a time of 1:56.11, with Darling tenths behind in 1:56.35.

On the women’s side, junior Stephanie Garvin took home a second place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.65 and third in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.42. Sophomore Roz Stoa earned third behind Garvin in the 200 freestyle with a 1:56.47, while taking another third in the 400 IM, going a lifetime best 4:40.08. Senior Janna Check received two third-place finishes as well, in the 200 fly and 100 fly. Check’s butterfly times were recorded as 2:13.31 and 59.58, respectively. Finally, freshman Clare Martell touched third in the women’s 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:08.77.

For the men, Sturdivant grabbed a second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.15 along with his win in the longer breaststroke event. Freshman Ricky Davis scored two second-place finishes in the 200 free and 400 IM. In a tightly packed 200 freestyle race, Davis posted a 1:46.09, and in the 400 IM a 4:14.03. Junior Thomas Everson took home second in the 200 IM in a time of 1:58.05 and third in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.31.

Along with Darling’s third place in the 200 fly, he earned another in the shorter fly event, touching the wall at 51.97, one one-hundredth behind Broman’s 100 fly time. The freshmen distance duo of Tyler Lustig and Jack VanZee finished second and third in the 500 freestyle, going times of 4:49.03 and 4:51.60, respectively. Junior Noah Hanold was second behind Sturdivant in the 200 breast by just over a tenth, finishing at 2:11.57, while fellow junior Brian Borden finished second in the 100 back. Borden’s time of 52.87 was only a tenth behind first. To close out the top-three finishers, junior Colby Smith finished third in the 200 IM behind Everson, touching the wall at 1:59.36.

The Phoenix will be back in action on November 4th and 5th when they travel to UIC for a quad meet against Oakland, Wright State, and the home team.
