GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay swimming and diving coaching staff consisting of head coach Reed Robelot, assistant coach Tara Dowling and diving coach Tom Stover on Wednesday announced the addition of 14 student-athletes to the 2016-17 men’s and women’s rosters.

Inking National Letters of Intent (NLIs) during the signing period were Rachel Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), Ele Higley (Eau Claire, Wis.), Alyssa Hyland (Waterford, Wis.), Willow Kugel (Oregon, Wis.), Clare Martell (Bonduel, Wis.), Allissa Smith (Cambridge, Minn.), Claire Stuart (Sullivan, Wis.) on the women’s side, and Riley Darling (Lindstrom, Minn.), Ricky Davis (Milwaukee, Wis.), Tyler Lustig (Milwaukee, Wis.), Derrick Prenot (Winona, Minn.), Garrett Spencer (Lee’s Summit, Mo.), Jack VanZee (Hastings, Minn.) and Josh Yahr (Appleton, Wis.) on the men’s side.

Rachel Anderson (Washburn High) Minneapolis, Minn. Robelot on Anderson: Rachel really impressed us during the recruiting process with her technical abilities in the water, her maturity level and her academic achievement. She may also develop into quite a leader for us, as Rachel transitions from her role as a captain of her high school team.

Ele Higley (Eau Claire Memorial) Eau Claire, Wis. Stover on Higley: We are pleased to have Ele Higley of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, join our Green Bay Phoenix diving team next season. By all accounts, she is another of those well-rounded, well-prepared student-athletes that we love to recruit. Through her hard work, Ele has enjoyed success as an athlete in track & field, gymnastics, as well as diving. Her academic and athletic readiness for success at Green Bay is a tribute to all who have worked with her, including her Eau Claire Memorial High School coaches, Al Hudacek and Derick Black. She is coming from a high school program with a long tradition of developing talented divers. So we feel certain Ele is poised to make an immediate positive impact as a Phoenix diver. We expect her to help us continue the winning tradition of our Green Bay women's swimming and diving team on the boards and in the classroom.

Alyssa Hyland (Waterford Union) Waterford, Wis. Robelot on Hyland: Alyssa has consistently demonstrated a true love for our sport, and brings all four strokes to the table. With our need for breaststroke and distance next year, Alyssa could immediately make an impact on our team and in our conference. She has a natural feel for the water, and a no-nonsense approach to swimming.

Willow Kugel (Oregon High) Oregon, Wis. Robelot on Kugel: Willow’s physical talent stood out to us early on in the recruiting process, but upon meeting her it became apparent that her glowing attitude and positive demeanor could really add a few more intangibles to our team environment. She also has a multisport background and a great academic record.

Clare Martell (Bonduel High) Bonduel, Wis. Robelot on Martell: Clare was one of our first recruits, and jumped out to the coaching staff as a Phoenix from the very beginning. Academically, she is a great addition to an already strong team. However, her powerful stroke and ferocity in a race will prove to help us in the breaststroke events and relays.

Allissa Smith (Cambridge – Isanti) Cambridge, Minn. Robelot on Smith: Allissa is as explosive and athletic as any female recruit that I’ve seen. Although her strengths in butterfly currently take center stage on her resume, her freestyle and backstroke events may catch up quickly. Her underwaters could really be a game-changer for our relays this year.

Claire Stuart (Kettle Moraine) Sullivan, Wis. Robelot on Stuart: Strong, athletic, and speedy underwater, look for Claire to be a player for us in the sprint free and fly events. As another incoming freshman with a multi-sport background, Claire’s talents will develop and improve across all four years. She has accelerated a good deal this spring, and will show up ready to race this fall.

Riley Darling (Transfer - Anoka Ramsey Community College) Lindstrom, Minn. Robelot on Darling: Riley has really shown a lot of improvement and commitment to his sport over the past year. In joining a strong squad of butterflyers, he will add to an already competitive racing/training environment on our team. Academically, he is top-notch. We look forward to watching him this short course season.

Ricky Davis (Greenfield High) Milwaukee, Wis. Robelot on Davis: Ricky has the ability to swim all four strokes and kick underwater at a very high level. He brings a background and versatility that you always try to find in well-rounded utility swimmers. Ricky continued physical development should prove to push his swimming to new heights, as we’ve already seen this spring.

Tyler Lustig (Pius XI) Milwaukee, Wis. Robelot on Lustig: Tyler moves through the water in ways we can’t teach. His skills underwater will give his events a huge boost in the world of short-course yards. As a flyer and freestyler, we are looking for Tyler to be an impact player this fall, but there’s no telling what other events he may add to his arsenal over the next four years. He’s an exciting guy to watch.

Derrick Prenot (Winona Senior High) Winona, Minn. Stover on Prenot: Derrick Prenot is the kind of all-around student/athlete we like to add to our team. During his years at Winona Senior High School, Derrick was very successful in learning how to properly balance his time and effort as a successful student while becoming an accomplished athlete in three sports. A three-time Minnesota High School State Meet qualifier in diving, coached by Jeremiah Jackson, Derrick has shown remarkable growth over the years, becoming one of the top high school divers in Minnesota his senior year. Given a full-time commitment to diving as a member of the Green Bay Phoenix, Derrick will have the opportunity to continue that growth by focusing specifically on his diving skill development over a full college season. Building on his already considerable academic and athletic talents, we expect Derrick to quickly become a contributing member of our team in the classroom and on the boards.

Garrett Spencer (Lee’s Summit West) Lee’s Summit, Mo. Robelot on Spencer: Garrett is relatively new to the sport in comparison with his cohorts. He has natural speed in free and breast, and stands at an athletic six feet, four inches. With the help of our top tier strength & conditioning staff, Garrett will be a welcome addition to our sprint corps.

Jack VanZee (Hastings High) Hastings, Minn. Robelot on VanZee: Jack is a man of few words that prefers to let his swimming talk for him. He’s already shown talent in the middle/distance freestyle events, but don’t be surprised if he twists a butterfly event into his repertoire. Jack shows incredible discipline and dedication to the process. He is looking to make a name for himself during his freshman season.

Josh Yahr (Appleton North/East) Appleton, Wis. Stover on Yahr: Joshua Yahr will join the Green Bay Phoenix diving team after a successful high school career on the Appleton North/East High School team coached by Michael Schuelke. He has also trained with his club diving coach, Tim Foulks, as a member of the Fox Valley Dive Team. Joshua’s senior season was topped off with a top five finish at the WIAA State Meet. So we are looking forward to Joshua continuing that success at Green Bay.  His positive attitude and willingness to step up to challenges will make Joshua a valuable member of the Phoenix Dive Team.
