Green Bay Completes Day One at Conference Championships

ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the four-day 2016 Horizon League Championship meet on Wednesday, with both squads ending the afternoon just points off the podium at the Oakland Aquatic Center.

The Phoenix women concluded day one in a fourth-place tie among the league's eight-team field with 56 points, while the men are in fifth out of seven teams, claiming 83 points in the early going. Green Bay appeared in five final events overall on the day, with all four relay teams besting their listed seed times.

The women's 200 yard medley relay team comprised of Emily Gomez, Marlee Kiander, Haley Lucas and Racheal Weiland placed fifth in 1:43.67, besting its seed time by more than a second. In the afternoon’s third event, the quartet of Rosalyn Stoa, Natalie Neuwirth, Janna Check and Stephanie Garvin also took fifth in the 800 yard freestyle relay in 7:30.71.

On the men’s side, Charles Warren, Willem Poelmans, Alec Rutkowski and Derick Goodson placed fourth in the 200 medley relay at 1:30.75, while Brian Borden, Connor Huff, Colby Smith and Emanuel Hernandez took fifth in the 800 freestyle in 6:51.25, improving its seed time by over five seconds.

On the diving boards, sophomore Michael Klemm had the highest finish among Phoenix competitors on the men’s 3-meter boards, placing fifth with a score of 298.50. It marked the only final diving competition thus far.

Both squads return to action tomorrow morning at the Oakland Aquatic Center, with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. CT and finals starting at 4:30 p.m. CT. All events will once again be streamed live on ESPN3, with Thursday’s events found here (morning) and here (evening).
