Bilitz, Hurst Pace the Phoenix in the First Meet of the Season
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomore Mitchell Bilitz collected a second-place finish Saturday afternoon, covering the 6K course at Lewis University in a career-best 19:42 to open the 2015 season. Junior Eric Bilitz was not far behind his cousin and fellow Phoenix runner, placing 8th overall with a time of 20:09. On the women’s side, sophomore Kimberly Hurst was the first Phoenix runner to cross the line, finishing in 12th place with 15:34.
Mitchell Bilitz, the Phoenix leader in all seven races last season, built on the success found in his freshman campaign, working his way to his best individual finish in a Phoenix uniform. The third Phoenix runner to cross the line for the men was Erik Johnson, finishing in 33rd overall in a time of 21:21. Green Bay’s top five was rounded out by junior Austin Gokey and freshman Jacob Fierst who finished with times of 21:32 and 21:59, respectively.
Sarah Mauel, a First-Team All-Horizon League member in 2014, garnered the second spot on the Phoenix team after crossing the line in 15:45 in 17th place. Breanna Suess and Alexandra Kershner worked together for much of the race, with Suess finishing in 16:18 and Kershner finishing eight seconds behind her in 16:26. The final scoring spot for Green Bay went to Rachel Crites, with Crites covering the 4K course in 16:53.
The meet was scored on a head-to-head basis, with Green Bay being defeated by UIC, Lewis, UW-Parkside and Horizon League Rival Milwaukee on the women’s side, while the men picked up a victory over Chicago State but were edged by UIC, Lewis, UW-Parkside and Milwaukee.
The Green Bay cross country teams have a week off prior to being back in action on Sept. 12 when they compete at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
