Green Bay Routs Valparaiso to Advance to Tournament Semifinals

DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay left no doubt in its first-ever game at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday afternoon, cruising to an 89-60 victory over No. 9 seed Valparaiso in the quarterfinal round at Motor City Madness. The tournament’s top seed matched the Crusaders total points overall in the first half alone, knocking down 10 3s in the first 20 minutes and scoring 60 points on 61.8 percent shooting.

Green Bay (25-5) was on pace to set multiple tournament records, including points scored, margin of victory and 3s made before taking its foot off the gas pedal in the second half. Head coach Kevin Borseth had the luxury of keeping his starters fresh with additional rest time, leading by as many as 40 points in the game.

Jessica Lindstrom was on fire in the first half and led the Phoenix with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. It’s the 13th double-double for Lindstrom this season and the 21st in her career. The junior went 3-for-5 from 3-point range and 6-for-9 from the field overall.

The Horizon League Player of the Year, Mehryn Kraker, scored 11 points and also buried a couple of 3s in the convincing win. Kraker and four other teammates dished out three assists, as the team registered 19 assists in the game.

The Phoenix opened up a 29-11 lead after the first quarter, and a 60-25 lead at the intermission. Green Bay turned 23 Valparaiso turnovers into 31 points, while notching 17 steals led by Caitlyn Hibner’s five.

The 89 points scored by the Phoenix ties its season high, which it scored on two other occasions this season. The defending tournament champions finished 22-for-28 from the free throw line, the most free throws its attempted in a game this season.

All 12 Green Bay players that were dressed scored. With the game well in hand in the second half, the Phoenix benched was able to produce a season-high 43 points.

The No. 1 seed Phoenix will now await the winner of Sunday’s quarterfinal game between No. 4 Oakland and No. 5 Milwaukee. Those two teams meet on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET, with the semifinal game on Monday scheduled for 1 p.m. ET /12 p.m. CT.
