Men's Tennis Stays Perfect in League Play, Downs NKU 4-3
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay men’s tennis maintained its perfect Horizon League record by gutting out a comeback 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky on Sunday.
The Phoenix mixed up the doubles pairing for the first time this season. After Green Bay dropped No.3 doubles, the pairing of senior Joshua Schramm and sophomore Miles McDowall recorded their first win together, 6-4. In a tightly contested No. 1 doubles match the Phoenix fell 7-5 to give the Norse a 1-0 lead.
The Norse doubled their advantage after Kostadinov had to retire after just one game due to injury. However, the Phoenix battled back to even things up at two apiece when Miles McDowall and Charlie Ridout won their matches at No. 4 [6-4, 6-4] and No.5 [6-3, 6-4], respectively.
Green Bay kept the momentum going after freshman Radomirovic gave the Phoenix a 3-2 lead, winning No.6 singles [7-5, 6-3]. Shortly after, senior Schramm clinched the victory for Green Bay at No.3, beating his opponent [6-4, 6-3].
With the match already being decided, the Norse took the last point at No. 1 singles [7-6(4), 6-4].
“That took a complete team effort today. I am very proud of how the guys competed today and we are looking to keep this momentum going into next week,” said head coach Tim Dean after the win.
The win pushed Green Bay to 2-0 in Horizon League play in 2017. The Phoenix will be back on court next Sunday when it hits the road to face Detroit Mercy.
