Green Bay Wins Season-Best Third Straight Match
CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Less than 24 hours after downing Youngstown State, 4-3, the Green Bay men’s tennis team continued its strong Horizon League play in Cleveland, defeating the CSU Vikings 5-2 on Sunday morning at Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
It marked the Phoenix’s third straight win since falling a 5-2 decision vs. Valparaiso, a season best.
Green Bay (11-6, 4-1 HL) garnered the doubles point after wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Seniors Howard Scott and Joey Leto downed Colton Buffington and Kevin Goth at No. 2, 7-5, while freshman Matej Kostadinov and Miles McDowall beat Mirko Radosevic and Benjamin Slade at No. 3, 6-2. No. 1 singles went unfinished tied at 6-6.
In singles, Scott (6-1, 6-0) won his third consecutive match at the top spot, before Charlie Ridout gave the Phoenix a 3-0 lead after a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4. CSU grabbed its first point when Joe VanMeter edged Leo Gomez Islinger, 6-1, 6-4, snapping Gomez Islinger’s five-match win streak. However, Green Bay clinched the win following Kostadinov’s 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
With the match already decided, Joshua Schramm won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4, while Leto lost a shortened third-set tiebreak to Slade, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
The Phoenix will conclude regular season play next weekend in Highland Heights, Ky., against Northern Kentucky (8-5, 3-2 HL), before turning its attention to Horizon League Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., from April 29- May 1.
