GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After spending over a month on the road to kick-off its 2016 season, the Green Bay men’s tennis team made its first appearance at home on Friday evening, sweeping UW-Whitewater 7-0 at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.

The Phoenix were victorious in the night’s three opening doubles matches to take the point and the overall lead, 1-0. Senior Leo Gomez Islinger and sophomore Florian Kraenzler defeated the Warhawks’ No. 1 pairing, 6-4, while the Green Bay duos of Howard Scott and Joey Leto (6-3) and Matej Kostadinov and Miles McDowall (6-3) also tallied wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.

Playing against head coach Daniel Bickett’s alma mater, the Phoenix went on to sweep the remaining six singles matches, all of which came in straight sets, except for the evening’s best matchup at No. 1 singles.

In an all-senior showdown, Gomez Islinger and UW-Whitewater’s Jake Humphreys – a 2014-15 Division III All-American – squared off, each taking a set before it ultimately came down to a tiebreak. With both teams looking on, the two went back-and-forth until Gomez Islinger was able to clinch the point in thrilling fashion, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.

"This was a good match for our team coming back from a week without any competitive matches," said Bickett. "Whitewater is a tough team, and I was very happy with the way our guys competed. We have another good test coming up on Sunday versus a strong NAIA team."

Green Bay will have a short turnaround as it prepares for its next match against Cardinal Stritch on Sunday. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. from Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
