Green Bay in Fourth Place After Day 1 at the Horizon League Championships
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomore Avery Steen (Luck, Wis.) carded a 4-over 76 on Friday to help the Green Bay women’s golf team get off to a strong start and sit in fourth place after day one of the 2015 Horizon League Golf Championships at Mission Inn Resort.
Green Bay shot 327 in round 1 while Oakland and Youngstown State are tied atop the leaderboard after shooting 308. Cleveland State is third just three shots in front of Green Bay, while Valparaiso (334), UIC (336) and Detroit (337) round out the field.
A member of the All-Horizon League Team, Steen’s round included 12 pars and five bogeys before the sophomore birdied the 480-yard par-5 18th hole to finish the day. Oakland’s Morgan Smith is in first place by three shots after a 1-under par 71.
Juniors Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) and Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) are tied for 16th place after carding 83s, and Lexi Wilson (Marinette, Wis.) is two strokes behind them in a tie for 22nd place after an 85.
