The Shopko Foundation Supports New Outdoor Facility Through Donation
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – University of Wisconsin-Green Bay supporter and community philanthropist The Shopko Foundation, made a leadership gift of $250,000 to support the new soccer facility at UW-Green Bay. This donation will help elevate both Division I men's and women's soccer programs and enhance student intramural opportunities. Formal recognition of their gift will take place on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, when the men's basketball team faces UIC at 7 p.m. at the Resch Center.
Shopko Stores, Inc. and the Shopko Foundation have been supporting the UW-Green Bay since 1969 through gifts for athletics, scholarships, capital projects and the Weidner Center.
“The Shopko Foundation and Shopko Stores are proud to support UW-Green Bay with this grant,” said Michelle Hansen, manager at Shopko Foundation. “UW-Green Bay is an outstanding university, and this donation will help to improve its outdoor athletics and recreation facilities, which will impact student-athletes, the campus community and the greater Green Bay area.”
“The Shopko Foundation and Shopko Stores are an integral part of Northeast Wisconsin, and we are thrilled to have them as a major partner in this project. Their focus on supporting the health of Shopko customers, teammates and communities directly aligns with the outdoor facility project not only for the student-athletes here at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, but for the entire student body and additional community members who will benefit. We are honored to have the Shopko name and brand in our new facility,” said Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie.
The new soccer facility is part of a $4.9 million project that will include a state of the art soccer stadium, featuring a turf field, plaza, lights, permanent bleachers, and a restroom and concession building, along with a significant renovation to the softball field to include a permanent press box and bleachers, restrooms, cosmetic upgrades and walkway for easier fan accessibility. The project will also feature new technology infrastructure in order to stream soccer and softball games on ESPN3, which will provide national coverage for the university.
