Green Bay Goes Wire-to-Wire to Crush Milwaukee 80-56
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay shot 50 percent (30-for-60) and locked down Milwaukee to run away with the 80-56 victory on Saturday afternoon at the UWM Panther Arena. The Phoenix (16-11, 10-5 HL) held the Panthers (8-20, 4-11 HL) to 32 percent (18-for-56) shooting and with the lowest point total in any Horizon League game this season.
Green Bay, which picked up its sixth win in the last seven games against Milwaukee, opened up a 33-11 lead in the first half before the Panthers stormed back with a 16-4 run to end the half and cut the Phoenix lead to 37-27 at the break.
Khalil Small came up big in the second half, scoring 11 of his 14 points in the final 20 minutes. Small went 4-for-4 at the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds and registered three steals. The Phoenix went 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) at the line in the game, the highest free throw percentage it has shot in any Horizon League game this year.
Using 12 made free throws in 13 attempts, Warren Jones put an exclamation point on the Green Bay win with a late highlight reel dunk. Jones finished with 14 points and a team-high four assists.
Along with doing an outstanding job defensively on Milwaukee’s Cody Wichmann, Kenneth Lowe scored 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Lowe held Wichmann to 1-for-9 shooting from 3-point land and 4-for-12 from the field.
Charles Cooper added 10 points off the bench and a total of 10 players scored for Green Bay.
The Phoenix held a dominant 52-18 edge in the paint and recorded 37 points off the bench.
With the win, Green Bay at 10-5 in league play remains a half-game back of Oakland at 10-4. The two teams meet in Green Bay’s next game on Friday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU and is also Varsity GB, Alumni Night and Rock the Resch.
