Small Hits Late Free Throw, Green Bay Downs Toledo 78-77 in OT
TOLEDO, Ohio. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s basketball team used a made free throw from Khalil Small with six seconds remaining in overtime to get past Toledo on Saturday night at Savage Arena, 78-77. The Phoenix (4-4) ended its two-game losing skid with a much-needed road victory against a Rockets' (3-5) team that beat them on a buzzer-beater last season in Green Bay, returning the favor with a dramatic win on their home floor.
Small took a pass while curling underneath to the basket, was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws. Toledo's Steve Taylor rebounded the miss and went down the floor but lost control of the ball while being defended and couldn't get a shot off in time.
An 8-1 run capped by a Taylor basket gave Toledo a 63-58 lead but the Rockets wouldn't get another field goal in the final 4:57 of regulation as the Phoenix defense clamped down. Kerem Kanter sent the game into overtime with five seconds left with a shot in the paint to tie it 66-all. Kanter came through all night long, scoring a career-high 17 points in the effort.
Taylor led Toledo with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Williams added 20 points.
The game served as the fourth overtime already this season for Toledo, while Green Bay played in its first overtime game since its thrilling victory against Valparaiso in the Horizon League Tournament last year.
