Phoenix Fund Announces Dates, Events for Annual Fund Drive

GREEN BAY, Wis. ( - The 2011-12 Annual Phoenix Fund Drive will begin with a kick-off reception on Sept. 14 and include four major events, Green Bay Athletics announced on Thursday. The annual fund drive, which is the major fundraising event to raise funds for student-athlete scholarships, will run through Nov. 5.

Contributions to the Phoenix Fund go directly to provide scholarship dollars for Green Bay's more than 230 student-athletes that compete in 16 NCAA Division I sports. The campaign goal for the 2011-12 Annual Fund Drive is $425,000 and will be headed Denis Kreft, the newly appointed campaign chair. Kreft is a longtime Phoenix Fund Board member and is the Principal/Executive Director of Client Services for Imaginasium.

Membership in the Phoenix Fund has risen to over 800 in recent years, and becoming a member of the Phoenix Fund can come with numerous perks. Membership benefits can include but are not limited to invitations to special events, admission into the Phoenix Fund Room at men's and women's basketball games, and parking passes for basketball games. All fans of Green Bay Athletics are invited to join the Phoenix Fund at the special events during the 2011-12 Annual Fund Drive for an opportunity to learn more about the Phoenix Fund as well as meet Green Bay coaches and student-athletes.

The kick-off reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. at The Marq in De Pere on Sept. 14, with senior women's basketball senior Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) serving as a special guest speaker. Other speakers that will talk about the Phoenix Fund and its importance to the success of Green Bay Athletics will be UW-Green Bay Chancellor Thomas Harden, Director of Athletics Ken Bothof and Director of the Phoenix Fund Jeanne Stangel.

Three different reporting sessions will take place over the following six weeks. Reporting session #1 will take place at Mackinaw's Grill and Spirits in Green Bay at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28. Head men's basketball coach Brian Wardle will be the guest speaker and discuss the trials and tribulations of game scheduling at the Division I level.

Reporting session #2 will feature first-year men's soccer head coach Kris Kelderman, who will talk about living a balanced life as a Division I college coach or student-athlete. The reporting session will be held at Graystone Ale House in De Pere at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12.

The third and final reporting session will precede the Green Bay men's soccer game against Detroit on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The reporting session will be held in the Phoenix Fund Room at the Kress Events Center at 6 p.m. and feature women's basketball head coach Matt Bollant speaking on the definition of the "Green Bay Way."
