GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– The Green Bay men’s tennis team opened its Horizon League schedule with a victory on Saturday, defeating Valparaiso 6-1 in front of a packed crowd at Western Racquet and Fitness Club. The Phoenix improved to 11-7 overall and a perfect 6-0 on its home court, while the Crusaders dropped to 15-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.

“Top to bottom I thought we played very well today,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “Valpo is an up-and-coming team in our league. Their recruiting class was ranked 22nd in the country this year and they had four freshmen in the lineup today. They fought hard and pushed us, and I was proud of the way we responded to pull out the win.”

Green Bay got on the board first in exciting fashion, as Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) clinched the doubles point with an 8-7 win over Dave Bacalla and Daniel Oakes at the No. 1 spot. Tenzer and Scott were down 5-1 in the tiebreaker, but the duo was able to fight off a trio of Valpo match-point chances and rally for the 10-8 win.

“Tenzer and Scott’s comeback was phenomenal,” Thomas said. “That really set the tone for the match and showed how mentally prepared we were.”

Also earning a doubles win for the Phoenix was the tandem of Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany), which won 8-3 against Lucas Waak and Eric Honert the No. 3 spot.

Sophomore Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) made it 2-0 in favor of the Phoenix with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. Leto made quick work of Valpo’s Michael Savaglio, finishing off a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

“I was extremely impressed with Joey Leto today,” Thomas said. “He just executed his game plan, stayed true to it and played great tennis.”

Gomez Islinger put the Phoenix ahead 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bacalla at No. 2 singles, and Scott recorded the match-clinching point with his 6-3, 6-4 victory over Honert at No. 3.

Tenzer came out on top in an entertaining battle at the No. 1 spot, as the defending conference player of the year took down freshman standout Jeffrey Schorsch 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Schorsch, already Valpo’s single-season wins leader, was previously 24-6 on the year and 15-2 in dual meets at No. 1 singles.

Green Bay’s fifth singles win of the day came from Isaaks, who defeated Charlie Emhardt 7-5, 6-7, 10-7 at No. 5.

The Phoenix continues Horizon League play on Sunday morning, welcoming UIC to Western Racquet and Fitness Club at 10 a.m.
