Freeman Wins Twice at Michigan Tech
HOUGHTON, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay's Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.) continued her impressive senior campaign over the weekend, picking up a pair of individual victories as the Phoenix men's and women's Nordic skiing squads competed at the Central Collegiate Ski Association SuperTour stop at the Michigan Tech Trails on Saturday and Sunday.
Freeman was the top collegiate finisher in both the 5K classic and 10K freestyle races, crossing the finish line ahead of Northern Michigan's Christina Turman in both races. Freeman finished four seconds ahead of Turman in Saturday's 5K classic, crossing the line in 17:48.3. On Sunday, Freeman finished with a time of 33:38.5, five seconds ahead of her NMU rival.
The two wins over the weekend marked Freeman's fourth and fifth career individual race victories - all of which have been this season. The senior has now topped the CCSA podium three times this season.
"I thought our team did a great job this weekend," Freeman said. "Everyone went into the weekend very motivated to meet the goals we set for ourselves. Overall, I felt like most of us met our personal goals and we are fired up for the next set of races. On a personal note I was very excited going into this weekend, and I was extremely happy with how I raced on both days."
Freshman Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) was the second finisher for the Phoenix women in the classic race on Saturday, placing 14th (19:02.0). Sophomore Joelle Wightman (West Allis, Wis.) was second for Green Bay in Sunday's freestyle, finishing in 36:04.3.
Sophomore Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) was Green Bay's top finisher on both days, finishing ninth in Sunday's freestyle event (43:31.9) after placing 14th in Satuday's classic race (32:38.5).
Green Bay is next in action at the CCSA Championships on Feb. 18-19 in Ishpeming, Mich., hosted by Northern Michigan.
