Green Bay Sweeps YSU to Remain Perfect in Horizon League Play

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s tennis team finished its Ohio road swing on Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Youngstown State at the Boardman Tennis Center. With the win, the Phoenix remained unbeaten in Horizon League play (4-0) and improved to 14-7 overall.

Green Bay got the day started by taking the doubles point thanks to a pair of hard-fought wins. Junior Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and sophomore Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) first defeated the duo of Max Schmerin and Rodrigo Campos 8-5 at No. 2, and then sophomores Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) took down the Penguins’ Zeeshan Ismail and Sharvil Nawghare 8-6 at No. 3.

The Phoenix kept things rolling in singles action, winning all six matches, including four of them in straight sets.

Junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot over YSU’s Sebastian Hagn, Gomez Islinger won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 against Silviu Mistreanu and sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) routed Dawoud Kabli 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Isaaks also won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, defeating Ismail 6-4, 6-2.

Leto earned a come-from-behind win at the No. 4 spot, winning 6-1 in the second set and 6-3 in the third after dropping set one to Schmerin 3-6. Freshman Jorge Gonzalez Soler (Madrid, Spain) also grabbed a three-set win, taking down Campos 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 6.

Green Bay wraps up its regular season on the road next weekend, traveling to take on Horizon League opponents Detroit (Friday) and Wright State (Saturday).
