Nordic Ski Concludes Season at NCAA Central Region Championships

HOUGHTON, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay Nordic ski season drew to a close over the weekend as the men’s and women’s squads competed at the NCAA Central Region Championships, hosted by Michigan Tech.
As a team, the women placed seventh out of eight teams, while the men placed seventh out of seven squads.
The men’s team had six competitors take to the course on Saturday in the 10k classic, led by a 21st place finish from junior Matt Nichols (32:34.9). Freshman Kyle Marshall followed in 30th place (33:32.3) while sophomore Ben Lindberg (35:42.8, 41st), sophomore Phil Anshutz (36:10.2, 42nd), junior Chris Nichols (36:24.0, 43rd) and freshman Jake Bauer (36:53.5, 44th) rounded out the competitors for the Phoenix.
Junior Kailey Mucha set the tone for the women in Saturday’s 5k classic, crossing the finish line in 19:39.9, good for 27th. Classmate Hanne Guthrie and freshman Bree Mucha finished in 32nd and 33rd with times of 20:16.6 and 20:21.1, respectively and were followed by freshman Kayla Billett in 39th (21:30.0), freshman Cassie Thobe in 40th (21:30.5) and sophomore Mary Kozloski in 47th (22:21.1).
In Sunday’s freestyle races, bothand finished 12th in their respective races, with Nichols crossing the finish line in the men’s 15k freestyle in 43:04.4 and Mucha recording a time of 34:42.5 in the women’s 10k freestyle.
Also competing for the women on Sunday was Guthrie (35:52.5, 22nd),(37:28.5, 28th), Thobe (40:07.0, 35th), Billett (40:16.6, 40th) and Kozloski (40:46.4, 38th).
Finishing for the men in Sunday’s 15k freestyle were Marshall (45:54.4, 32nd), Bauer (46:43.2, 35th),(46:47.1, 37th), Anshutz (47:21.3, 40th) and Lindberg (47:53.9, 42nd).
