Mauel Wins Concordia Falcon Invite

Lauren Mauel won her first collegiate cross country race at the Concordia Falcon Invite

MEQUON, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After turning in two third-place finishes in the first races of the season, Green Bay women's cross country runner Lauren Mauel (Green Bay, Wis.) won the Concordia Falcon Invite Saturday in Mequon. Mauel finished the scenic 6K course with a time of 22:41.1 to win her first collegiate race.

"I never thought I would win a race in college," said recent Horizon League Runner of the Week. "Our whole team has been competing very well and winning is just an extra bonus."

Besides Green Bay, in-state and Horizon League rival Milwaukee was the only other Division I school competing in the race while 13 Division 3 programs also competed.

Freshman Erica Johnson (Felch, Mich.) finished third among Division I competitors and fourth overall with a time of 23:30.7. Junior Areanna Lakowske (Sparta, Wis.) finished fifth among DI runners and seventh overall with a time of 24:04.1 while Nicole Will (Luxemburg, Wis.) was sixth in the DI competition and eighth overall, crossing the line in 24:06.5. Freshman Kayla Hucke (Hartland, Wis.) rounded out the top five for Green Bay finishing the course in a time of 25:46.3 which was good enough for 12th place among DI competitors and 33rd overall.

As a team, the Phoenix took top honors among Division I teams scoring 27 points while placing second overall with 52 points.

On the men's side, the Phoenix placed second in the Division I competition and fourth overall among 14 teams. Against Milwaukee, Green Bay scored 45 points and 150 overall.

Sophomore Alex Kimble (Green Bay, Wis.) paced the Phoenix with a time of 26:44.43, finishing in fifth place among Division I competitors and eighth overall. Josh Clark (Gillett, Wis.) crossed the line in seventh place, 17th overall with a time of 27:03.06

Senior Erik Blomsness (Winona, Minn.) crossed the line with a time of 28:01.82, finishing in 10th among DI competition and 41st overall. Junior Steve Wagner (Seymour, Wis.) finished in 45th place overall, 11th in Division I competition while Billy Lobner (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) followed closely behind in 46th place and 12th against Milwaukee with a time of 28:21.04.

Green Bay will have two weeks to prepare for the Notre Dame Invitational held Friday, Sept. 20 in South Bend, Ind.
