Women's Soccer Kicks off Horizon League Slate Against Oakland

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – It’s a mixture of new and old this weekend at Santaga Stadium as the Green Bay women’s soccer team kicks off its 2013 Horizon League schedule against conference newcomer Oakland on Friday at 4 p.m. before hosting Loyola, who recently left the conference, on Sunday at 1 p.m. 

Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) continues to lead the team with two goals and three assists, while Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) is tied for the team lead with three helpers. Katy Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.) and Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) have shared time in net, posting a combined 1.14 goals-against average and a .703 save percentage.

Where: Aldo Santaga Stadium, Green Bay, Wis.
Friday’s meeting will be the third time in program history the Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies face each other and first time as conference foes. Each team has one win in the series, as Oakland won the first-ever meeting in 1999 (4-3) and Green Bay took the second (2-1).

Oakland is 4-4-1 this season, and has won four of its last five matches. Most recently the Golden Grizzlies topped Fort Wayne, 3-0, at home last Saturday. Last season Oakland captured a Summit League title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.

Meghan Reynolds leads the team and is tied for the conference lead with five goals in addition to an assist. Joan Sieja has a team and conference-best four assists with one goal. In net, Payj O’Shea has started seven of the nine matches this season and has the second-highest GAA in the conference, 2.50, in addition to a .674 save percentage.

Sunday’s matchup is the 25th all-time meeting between the two squads, and the all-time series is knotted at 11-11-2. It will be the first meeting as non-conference opponents since 1993. Green Bay has not been defeated by the Ramblers since 2008, going 2-0-2 since 2009.

Loyola is 3-4-3 this season and will open play in its new conference, the Missouri Valley Conference, at home against Indiana State on Friday before making the trip to Green Bay.  

Leading the team with three goals is Samantah Gage, while six additional Ramblers have found the back of the net this season. Shelby Koch has a team-best two assists. Monica Gonyo has played all 10 matches in goal, recording a 1.31 goals-against average and a .797 save percentage.
