– First-year Green Bay volleyball head coach Michaela Franklin has announced the addition of three new players to her 2013 roster, as Jillian Bauer (Verona, Wis.), Shannon Hurley (Connellsville, Penn.) and Emily Riese (Fond du Lac, Wis.) are each set to join the Phoenix in the fall. Hurley heads to Green Bay following a standout high school career in Pennsylvania, while Bauer and Riese will join Franklin’s first Phoenix squad as Division I transfers.

“I am very pleased to announce the addition of Bauer, Hurley and Riese,” said Franklin, who was hired at Green Bay on Jan. 8. “This class brings experience from many levels of the game, which will fit perfectly with the returning group of experienced players.  What I am expecting most out of this class is their internal and outwardly-competitive drive to have a positive impact on the Green Bay volleyball program.”

Bauer, a native of Verona, Wis., played her freshman season of collegiate volleyball at Ohio State, where she appeared in 24 matches and started four times. The libero tallied 39 digs on the year, including a career-high 10 against Dayton on September 7, 2012.

A four-time team MVP and four-time all-conference selection at Verona Area High School, Bauer led her squad to a 42-1 overall record and a Big Eight conference title as a senior in 2011.  During that year she was selected as the Big Eight Player of the Year, Wisconsin State Journal Player of the Year, named first-team all-state and was a finalist for Gatorade Player of the Year. The 5-foot-9 Bauer was voted team captain three straight years, and finished her senior season with 385 kills and 369 digs.

“Bauer has a true sense for the game after playing outside in high school and then making the successful transition to the libero position during her senior year of club,” Franklin said. “She has a natural instinct for the game and is a natural leader. What I admire most about Bauer is her ability to stay confident, assertive and competitive all at the same time. We are depending on Bauer to bring her competitive edge and leadership qualities to our team.”

Hurley, a 6-foot outside hitter from Connellsville, Penn., was a three-time all-state selection at Greensburg Central Catholic High School in the Pittsburg area. She was also a three-time all-conference and all-district pick, and was voted as the Class A MVP by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as a senior. Hurley recorded 169 kills, 46 digs, 32 service aces and 22 blocks as a senior in 2012, and was also named MSA Sports Network Co-Player of the Year and was a member of the AAU Junior Nationals All-Star Team.

“Hurley’s recruiting process to Green Bay is a pretty unique story,” Franklin said. “I got to know Shannon off the court and fell in love with her dynamic personality, mental toughness and competitive nature. Hurley has a cannon for an arm and we are relying on her to bring depth to our outside position. Her contagious personality will fit perfectly with Green Bay volleyball.”

Riese, a setter from Fond du Lac, Wis., attended North Dakota State in 2012-13 where she played in 23 matches and made five starts. She finished the year with 302 assists – good for second on the team – and 127 digs.

The 5-foot-10 Riese was a three-time all-conference honoree and two-time team MVP at Fond du Lac High School, where she led the Cardinals to a 39-13 record and an appearance in the state championship match in 2011. She was a two-time all-state pick, and earned a first-team nod as a senior.

“Riese is a daughter of a coach, as her mother Julie is the head varsity volleyball coach at Fond du Lac High School,” Franklin said. “She has been around the game since she was a child, and she has the natural gift of setting and possesses qualities that cannot be trained. She is a fierce and sneaky competitor and has the ability to dish the rock. We are depending on Emily to bring experience, leadership and the ability to run an effective offense to our program.”

Bauer, Hurley and Riese will join a Phoenix roster that features eight returning letterwinners in 2013.
