Green Bay Edges Western Michigan in Spring Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team (1-0) opened its spring schedule Friday evening with a hard-fought victory over Western Michigan (3-2) at West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Phoenix swept the doubles point before splitting the six singles contests en route to a 4-3 win.

The senior duo of Craig Cox (Surrey, England) and Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) got things started with an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot, defeating WMU's Nadin Indre and Ruben Greiner. The Phoenix then secured the doubles point by winning a pair of close ones, as Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) won 8-7 (7-5) at No. 2 and Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) took an 8-7 (7-2) decision at No. 3.

In singles action, the Phoenix got wins from Tenzer, Cox and Islinger to close out the 4-3 victory. Tenzer earned a come-from-behind win over WMU's Ross VanderPloeg at No. 2 (3-6, 6-2, 6-2), while Cox and Islinger grabbed straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.

The Phoenix is back in action in Kalamazoo on Saturday, taking on IPFW, before heading to Milwaukee to take on IUPUI on Sunday at noon.
