GREEN BAY Wis. ( - The Green Bay (2-10-3, 0-4-2 HL) men's soccer team put up a tough-fought battle before UIC's (7-5-2, 3-1-1 HL) defense shut out the Phoenix 2-0 Saturday, Oct. 20 at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The loss all but eliminates Green Bay from the Horizon League Championship which kicks off Nov. 6.

Green Bay's Jordan Dover (Ontario, Canada) had the team's first good look at the goal with 18:14 to play in the first half when he fired a shot from the top of the box but UIC goalie Piotr Kikolski was there for the save.

With 10:33 to play in the first half, Ivan Stanisavljevic took the corner kick for the Flames and found Ned Pavlovic who passed to Jorge Alvarez on the doorstep on the right side of the box for the header goal and the 1-0 advantage.

Dover again had a good look at the goal from the top of the box with 1:47 remaining in the half but was a bit high over the bar. Dover finished the game leading the Phoenix with three shots on the night.

"It was getting frustrating how close I was coming with my shots, especially because I felt we had momentum and a goal coming but things just didn't go our way," Dover said.

With momentum on its side in the final minutes of the first half, Green Bay's Alonso Flores (Chicago, Ill.) took a shot from the left side of the box with 35 seconds on the clock. Sebastian Xiong (Cottage Grove, Wis.) rebounded the ball and scored what appeared to be a goal but was called for a hand ball foul instead.

"I hit the ball with my head," Xiong said. "We could've had a break at that point and it would have been nice going into the half tied 1-1 but that's how the game goes sometimes."

UIC edged the Phoenix 6-5 on shots and 4-0 on corner kicks in the first period of play.

Green Bay continued to battle in the second half but Stanisavljevic's goal from 45 yards out in the 70th minute was too much for the Phoenix to overcome in front of the 177 fans in attendance.

"It's just frustrating knowing the effort we're giving and things just aren't going our way this year," said Xiong.

The Phoenix finished the game with 10 shots on the night while UIC had 13. All four of Green Bay's corner kicks in the game came in the second half of play. In addition to Dover's team-high three shots in the game, Flores and Trent Allison (Green Bay, Wis.) added two shots each.

Green Bay will play its final game of the 2012 season hosting Cleveland State Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium. Before the contest, the team will honor senior goalkeeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) and forward Alonso Flores.
