Women's Soccer Opens 2012 Friday Night at Home
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team will get its 2012 season underway at home on Friday, hosting South Dakota State at 7 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The contest will be the first regular season event of the 2012-13 year for Phoenix Athletics.
Green Bay's game against South Dakota State will be the first in its nine-game home schedule and its only game at Santaga Stadium until welcoming Michigan Tech on Sept. 7. The team will play in tournaments at Florida Gulf Coast (Aug. 24-26) and SIU Edwardsville (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) before returning home.
In a tune-up last Saturday, Green Bay used goals from sophomore Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) and freshman Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) to post a 2-1 victory over Drake in exhibition action. Eigenberger's goal came via a penalty kick in the second minute, and Hartmann headed in a cross from sophomore Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.) with less than 15 minutes to play to give the Phoenix the win.
Green Bay, which finished the 2011 season at 3-11-4, dropped a 1-0 decision at South Dakota State on Sept. 9 of last season. The Jackrabbits had a 12-6-2 record last season and were undefeated in league play (8-0-1) to win the Summit League title.
